Benje and Mr Bee Visit the Nurse

One morning, little Benje woke up as usual in his home. He was three months old now, and this was going to be a special day: he was going to see his nurse for some injections.
“I’m so nervous,” thought Benje, as his bottom lip sprung out like a diving board.
“Now, there’s nothing to worry about today,” said his Mummy, stroking the fine hair on his head. “Mr Bee will look after you.”
Benje beamed back as if to say “Oh goody, is he coming too?”
His mummy said he was. But she didn’t say it once, she didn’t say it twice; she said it three times: “Yes he is … YES he is!... YES HE IS!”

A giggle of approval was screamed back.

At the doctors, Mr Bee was buzzing around as usual on Benje’s wrist.
“Bzzzzzzzzz it’s nothing to worry about, ” said Mr Bee.
Benje looked at his brightly coloured wings and smiled. Mr Bee had such a smiley face that he felt happier every time he looked at him.
“Now then, is this the young man who needs to have his injections today?” asked the nurse in a nursey kind of way. Mummy nodded back and started to get him ready for the big moment. “Now, there’s nothing to worry about, it’ll all be over in a minute,” she said soothingly.

“Bzzzzzzzzz” said Mr Bee, as Benje looked across to his right. “Just keep looking at me, I can make you think of something nice instead.” So Benje looked straight into Mr Bee’s big round eyes. His big round eyes. His big, black and white round eyes…
“Hey, we’re in a garden!” screamed Benje. “How did we get here?”
“Bzzzzzzz Bzzzzzz Bzzzzz never mind how we got here, just look around you, Benje… it’s beautiful” said Mr Bee, beaming with delight. The garden had flowers of every colour you could imagine. Every flower had its own sweet smell. Up in the bright blue sky Benje could see the sunshine was wearing his sunhat, drinking lemonade through a straw.
“Wowwweee, let’s explore!” screamed Benje in delight.

Later that evening, Daddy was talking to Mummy. She was explaining what a brave little boy Benje had been at the doctors, and how he had hardly cried at all when the nurse put her needle in.
“He was such a brave little boy, he just kept staring at his bee.”
“Gag a goob goob goob ga cha cha oooow!” said Benje, looking directly at Mr Bee.
“I wonder what he’s trying to tell that Bee,” said his daddy. “He talks to it all day long!”
“He’s telling him what a good boy his is, aren’t you ?” Benje kept smiling at Mr Bee as his mummy continued… “Yes you are!”
But she didn’t say it once, she didn’t say it twice; she said it three times: “Yes you are … YES you are!... YES YOU ARE!”
